Living with FND: Tips for Daily Wellbeing and Balance

Practical ways to manage symptoms, reduce stress, and maintain quality of life

Living with FND can feel unpredictable, but small changes can make a big difference. Managing fatigue, muscle weakness, or movement difficulties often requires planning and patience. The goal isn’t to push through symptoms, but to work with your body and brain — finding your personal rhythm.

One of the most important parts of daily management is pacing. Try to balance activity and rest by spreading tasks across the day, taking regular breaks, and avoiding overexertion. This helps prevent flare-ups and gives your brain time to reset between activities.

Therapies such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can also help. These approaches focus on retraining movement, improving function, and addressing stress or anxiety that may worsen symptoms. Building trust with a supportive healthcare team makes this process much smoother.

Don’t forget the emotional side of recovery. Joining peer support groups or online FND communities can help you share experiences, find encouragement, and reduce the feeling of isolation. Living with FND may bring challenges, but it can also inspire strength, resilience, and new ways of understanding your body.
